Starbucks said on Friday that employees would exist immune to wear Black Lives Matter shirts and pins, a sudden reversal of a company policy that had banned the phrase because it could "amplify divisiveness."

Amid social media backfire to a policy, the coffee chain also alleged that information technology would provide 250,000 Starbucks-branded Black Lives Matter shirts for baristas and other employees who desire them.

"Starbucks stands in solidarity with our Blackness partners, community and customers, and understands the desire to express themselves," Starbucks said in a statement. "We go on to listen to our partners (employees) virtually how they want to take a represent justice, while proudly wearing the greenish apron and standing united together."

Calls to cold-shoulder Starbucks emerged afterward Starbucks posted a serial of messages on social media that many employees considered to be hypocritical.
