How to Download + Sign Up for Uber

Uber is like Instagram, in that the majority of its functions are carried out on its application for your mobile device, as opposed to on the actual Uber website.  This tutorial will help you get started with Uber by learning how to download and install the Uber app on your mobile device (e.g. tablet computer or smart phone), and then sign up for an Uber account.

We'll be doing this on an Android-powered phone, but for an Apple iOS device (such as an iPhone or iPad) or Windows Phone, the process shouldn't be radically different.

How to download and install the Uber app

  1. Turn on your smart phone or tablet computer and look for the Google Play / Play Store program (it will be called App Store on an iOS device) and tap it to open it.

  2. Tap the search box at the top of the screen, and use your (virtual) keyboard to type in "uber".  You should see a result show up named Uber (on Android devices, it will have Uber's logo beside it).  Tap that.

  3. On the new screen, tap Install (or on iOS devices, tap Get and then Install).

  4. On an Android device, you will be notified of what parts of your phone the Uber app might need access to in order to function properly.  Just tap Accept.

    If you're using an iOS device, you may be asked to log into your Apple Account before you go any further.  Do so, or if you don't have an Apple Account, click this link and follow the instructions in order to set one up.

  5. The Uber app will automatically begin downloading and installing.  When it finishes, tap Open to begin using it.

How to sign up for Uber

  1. Once you have the Uber app open, tap Register in the top-right corner.

  2. You can use your Google or Facebook account credentials to sign up for Uber by tapping either of the two icons at the top of the screen.  Otherwise, scroll down and tap in each of the boxes highlighted in the screenshot below, and type in:

    – Your first name
    – Your last name
    – Your email address
    – Your mobile phone number (tap the country flag to select a different country code)
    – A password with which to protect your Uber account

    When you've entered all of the required information, tap Next.

  3. On the next screen, you will be asked to input your billing information.  You can input promotional codes here by tapping Promo Code, typing in your promo code, and then tapping Add Promo.

    You can also use your PayPal account to pay for using Uber by tapping PayPal at the bottom of the screen, logging into your PayPal account, and then following the instructions from there.

    Otherwise, tap in each of the boxes in the screenshot above and type in or select:

    – Your credit card number
    – The month that your credit card expires (in numerical form)
    – The year that your credit card expires (the last two digits)
    – Your credit card's security code
    – The country in which you live
    – Your regional mailing code

    Once you have entered all of this information, tap Register.

That's it!  You're all set to use Uber!
